Unfortunately, it’s something that hits many kids and they spend a lot of time at Christchurch Hospital with their parents in what becomes a life and death struggle. This week in history saw the city’s first gas lights illuminated on December 24, 1864. On the same day in 1953, four Christchurch people were among 151 killed in a railway disaster at Tangiwai in the central North Island. On December 25, 1864, the Durham Street Methodist Church opened – the city’s first stone church. On December 30, 1988, water restrictions were put in place for first time in the city’s history as water tables dropped to record low levels. On December 31, 1984, the kiwi house was opened at Orana Park (the first chick was born in captivity in November 1989).

All Black legend Richie McCaw gave up part of Christmas Day to do his bit to help fight the large fire which flared up near Hororata. McCaw’s wife, former Blackstick Gemma Flynn, posted a photo of the two of them and McCaw’s niece Chloe beside a helicopter on Instagram saying: “Merry Christmas from Mr and Mrs McClaus. Santa was out fighting fires but arrived home in time for tea.”

‘Can you hold please?’ – What music you are most likely to hear

By Bridget Rutherford WE’VE ALL been on hold to StudyLink or the Inland Revenue Department listening to Brooke Fraser, Stan Walker or Anika Moa as we wait impatiently for our student allowance payout or tax return. So how is it decided what songs make the playlists? There are some common themes. If you think think you’ve heard Brooke Fraser, Stan Walker, Jamie McDell, Six60 and Anika Moa feature on hold music a lot – you’re right. Their songs such as Something in the Water, Arithmetic, Messages, Aotearoa, Falling in Love Again, Dreams in My Head, Life in Sunshine, Falling in Love Again and Special feature on the Work and Income, StudyLink and IRD hold music playlists. Six60 appears to be the most popular. It has two songs on the IRD playlist, and four on both StudyLink and Work and Income. Work and Income has 40 songs on its playlist and StudyLink has 24. They tend to stick with Kiwi music. The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties, Evermore, Golden Horse, Goodshirt, and Fat Freddy’s Drop feature on Work and Income, while StudyLink has the likes of Che Fu, Summer Thieves, Sola Rosa, Maimoa and Tiki Tane. Meet Jonty: The cancer sufferer By Andrew King IN MARCH last year, Juliet and Hamish Gray got some of the worst news a parent could receive – their eight-year-old son had cancer. Jonty Gray had been “offcolour” for a few weeks and was having regular headaches. On a family trip over Easter weekend last year he became breathless while walking up a hill and developed bruises on his body. His family returned from Wanaka and took him to Christchurch Hospital where he was diagnosed with T-cell leukaemia. Fast-forward 21 months and the 10-year-old’s outcome is looking positive after numerous hospital visits, about six to nine months of intensive chemotherapy, and plenty of support from his family, friends and hospital staff. In March next year, Jonty has been asked to sound the horn which will start thousands of participants off in the Star Media City2Surf fun run. Mrs Gray, who is a dentist, said Jonty is responding well to chemotherapy, which he will finish in July 2019. Then doctors will monitor his bone marrow and watch for any side effects from the medication used to treat his cancer. When he first started showing signs of being unwell, it wasn’t apparent at the start just how sick he was. “We just told him to drink more water and go to bed earlier,” Mrs Gray said as he was complaining of headaches. When he was admitted to hospital, he was diagnosed

straight away. “You think it can’t be happening to your family, but then that is not true as two to three children are diagnosed with cancer each week,” she said. About a week later, Jonty started his treatment, but he wasn’t letting it get him down. The creative boy came up with ways to amuse himself while in hospital. “I had a game with another patient where we would try to do the most crazy thing we could think of while attached to the pump. So I scooted around the wards with it. But then she brought in a unicycle and carried a baby around while attached to her pump. That was hard to beat,” he laughed. He also has fun with the hospital staff. “We play a game with the anaesthetist where he will set a total for me to count to before I fall asleep,” he said.

He said he had beaten the anaesthetist a few times, but some times he would cheat. “I would pretend to push the button that started the drugs and start counting, by time they had realised that I hadn’t pushed it I had already counted to about 10,” he laughed. Jonty attends Cashmere Primary School and will be starting year six next year. He loves to draw and has taken to designing houses. Earlier in the year, he designed new railroad lines for Kaikoura to replace the ones damaged in the earthquakes. While he does get tired easy, he loves to get out and play sports including touch for his school and hockey for Southern United. “I like hitting balls and scoring goals and blocking them,” he said. The one thing that really gets under his skin is he can’t eat sushi, unless it is freshly made, because of his low immunity. “It annoys me. I love sushi,” he said. Jonty has an older brother and sister. Olivia, 20, recently raised more than $2800 for the foundation by running in

In Brief NEW YEAR ALCOHOL BANS Alcohol bans will be in place in some public areas on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Akaroa and Okains Bay will have bans in place from 5pm on Sunday to 7am Monday. Spencer Park will also have a ban from 8.30pm on Sunday until 6am Monday. Alcohol can be carried through the ban areas provided the container is unopened. RUBBISH COLLECTION DAYS Rubbish collection days will be different again next week. With New Year’s Day on Monday, each normal rubbish collection day will move to the following day. Friday collections will move to Saturday, with normal collection days resuming on January 8. Meanwhile, all eco-drops and transfer stations will be closed on New Year’s Day. All city libraries will be closed on New Year’s Day and January 2. SPEED LIMIT CHANGE More than 500 submissions have been received on the proposed speed limit changes along Dyers Pass Rd. The city council is looking at introducing a reduced flat speed limit of 60km/h from the Sign of the Takahe to the intersection of Governors Bay and Dyers Pass Rds. It also wants to put no-passing lines along some sections.

Safeguarding future of estuary shellfish Little is known about who is harvesting shellfish from the Avon-Heathcote Estuary and what impact, if any, this is having on the sustainability of the beds and the feeding grounds for our bird species. Environment Canterbury councillor and AvonHeathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust member Cynthia Roberts is hoping new research will shed light on what’s happening. Sarla Donovan reports ANYBODY WHO regularly drives along the McCormacks Bay causeway can’t have failed to notice it. Groups of people dotted over the sand at low tide, trousers and skirts hitched up, buckets nearby. They are collecting shellfish from the sandbed and there seems to be an increasing number doing it. But how safe is the practice? And how sustainable? That’s where the research project comes in. Canterbury University third year biological science student

Stephanie Hampson has been brought on board this summer to try and shed some light on an area where, Cynthia Roberts admits, there are “gaps in our knowledge.” Both the university and the trust have contributed to the costs of the summer research project, which will be supervised

by Associate Professor Islay Marsden, an aquatic ecophysiologist from the School of Biological Science. Prof Marsden has been a member of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust for 10 years, and is currently the chairwoman. The trust manages the ecological welfare of the estuary and is

working to update its management plan, said Dr Roberts. “As part of that, we realised there are gaps in our knowledge, and one of those was shellfish and harvesting. We’re particularly interested because you regularly see people harvesting at the end of the causeway, in spite of signs saying it’s not healthy – it

is still quite contaminated after the earthquakes and after high rainfall.” The levels of contamination vary – signs only get put up when there are concerns – but Dr Roberts said people continue, even then. “Signs were up pretty well continuously during the heavy winter rains. The estuary is a receiver for all the contaminants coming down from rooftops, roads, pathways. Stormwater carries high contaminants, such as dog faeces and so on and this is the receiving basin of all the stormwater off quite a large catchment.” One of the aims of the plan is for people to be able to resume shellfish harvesting, she said: “But we want to make sure if they are – they’re not poisoning themselves.” Miss Hampson said she was looking forward to the project. “I think it will be very interesting. I haven’t done much social science and I’m learning a lot about how people perceive the environment. A lot of people know about the bad – like smell, murky water – but something like the sea lettuce for example, they don’t know if it’s good or bad.”

SUMMER aim of research (A certain amount is good – too much is bad.) One of her tasks will be asking estuary users to complete a questionnaire including what they are collecting shellfish for and how often they come. There’s also a bit of citizen science involved. People who have been regular collectors over the years may have insight into how the abundance of shellfish has changed. And there’s also the small matter of the health and density of the shellfish beds themselves, and whether harvesting is really sustainable. Dr Roberts compares them to kidneys. “Wonderful filters of any waterway; they’re a very important part of an estuary eco-system. We want to maintain a healthy population, so will be doing some sampling and looking at the health of those by doing some quadrant surveys.” Research will be based at the end of the causeway but may be extended to two other sites on the Southshore side of the estuary. There has been work done on the health of shellfish over the past 30 years, but not in the postearthquake period.

“We’re intrigued that so many groups are out there harvesting,” said Dr Roberts. “Are they using it for bait? . . . we don’t know. One of the things that’s happened around the country is these things creep up on us and all of a sudden we’ve wiped out a whole area of paua or crayfish and have lost the ability to replenish it because it’s too late. “And we have one of the biggest populations of godwits and there are many other estuary bird feeders such as pied stilts, spoonbills and herons, for example – which are very dependent on the food in the estuary. “There could be a trophic cascade (where an alteration in the food chain triggers changes in the ecosystem.) Over harvesting

in any environment could upset the balance.” Does she think the influx of people into the city helping with the rebuild has anything to do with it? “The answer to that is one of the reasons we want to do this research. I think full stop there’s been an increase in population in Christchurch and we have more people coming in who love fishing and catching their food. “This is a lovely, free resource and there’s all sorts of reasons people might be out there. Maybe those people haven’t been through our school system where we put such an emphasis on the environment so it’s part of our challenge to educate them.” The research findings should be published the end of March.

Police find teens accused of ‘drown him’ case By Andrew King POLICE HAVE caught two teenagers accused of being involved in the Rolleston ‘drown him’ assault case. The assault took place on November 4 after a fireworks display. The Star has learned that police have had a difficult job determining who was involved in the incident due to a lack of co-operation. A 15-year-old says he was punched and kicked and then dragged to a water race, and had his head held under water while his attackers chanted “drown him.” Two youths, aged 15 and 16, have been referred to youth aid, a police spokeswoman said. A youth aid officer will review the case, meet with the victim and alleged offenders and determine the best course of action, which could include charges. Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the assault which left the victim with a

nasty gash on his face that required stitches and a night in hospital. The Star has also learned a complaint about two officers involved in the case has been laid with the Independent Police Conduct Authority. IPCA case resolution manager Monica Robbers said due to privacy issues it cannot confirm whether it received a complaint or give any other details about the officers involved. Police have been tight-lipped over the investigation since the attack was revealed by The Star last month. However, police confirmed a search warrant was executed at a Rolleston property. The Star has been told shoes and a cellphone were seized. But police would not discuss specifics about what was taken in the raid. The teenager was assaulted when he allegedly refused to hand over his cap after he was confronted on Tennyson St at about 10.30pm.

News Corrections innings closed PROBATION officer John Wihone has brought down the curtain on 45 years of public service, including 40 at the Department of Corrections, where he served in both Canterbury prisons and Community Corrections. Mr Wihone worked at a bank after leaving school, and then at a Red Cross war veterans home in Sydney. He joined the New Zealand Army in 1972, serving five years, including two-and-a-half-years in Southeast Asia, based in Singapore. After being discharged from the army in 1987, he was employed by Corrections, then known as the Prison Service. “About a week before my discharge from the army, I decided that it would be prudent to have a job lined up when I left,” he said. “I had a look through the phone book and came across the prison phone number. I rang it and they told me to come in for an interview. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but overall things seemed to go well; so much so, that I was at Christchurch Men’s Prison for just over 10 years.” Mr Wihone’s next move was to Community Corrections and followed a similar pattern. “A friend who was a probation officer encouraged me to apply for a probation position. I applied without any expectation and was surprised when I was interviewed. I accepted the role and have held a number of positions, including on various project teams, for the past 30 years.” While there have been changes over his time at Corrections, the basic requirements of the job, and the people Corrections work with, have stayed by and large the same. “Drug use has become more serious but mostly we are working with the same issues of 40 years ago. I think a change and a real challenge for the department is that the public now seem to have a higher expectation that we can quickly ‘fix’ offenders and turn them into socially and legally responsible citizens. “We are still dealing with people and many have been damaged by a poor upbringing, poverty, lack of education and jobs, and many other social problems. It still takes a long time to effect change with a lot of offenders.” Mr Wihone said the role itself has also become more specialised and this helps the department better manage the people it works with. “We now have significant input from specialists, such as psychologists, to develop appropriate plans and work more

effectively with offenders. “The most important and effective part of our job remains the same, it is still face-to-face time with offenders.” His colleagues say he has been dedicated to supporting offenders to make changes in their lives and move away from crime. He has shown a particular interest in the needs of Maori offenders and improving the way that Corrections works with this group of offenders. Mr Wihone said the involvement of families is very important and offers Corrections staff a better idea of what is happening. “With Maori, I have a reasonable knowledge of tribal boundaries and could recognise some names that were part of the whakapapa of my iwi, Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Porou.

“This knowledge has helped me break the ice with Maori that I have interviewed or supervised and with their families.”

He was also a driving force behind the correct pronunciation and use of Te Reo in Canterbury, and a leader in the introduction of a number of Corrections rehabilitation programmes which still run today. Mr Wihone worked for a number of years as probation’s representative and prosecutor at the New Zealand Parole Board hearings for recall applications. For 14 years, he was court officer at the Christchurch District Court and was part of the team delivering training to new probation officers, and, later, as a subject matter expert in the provision of information

Said Mr Wihone: “A highlight is whenever a persistent offender disappears off our books. “I have run into a few of them over the years and they have told me how they have changed their lives. “I would think that Corrections has had a significant input in facilitating their decision to turn their lives around. The cynic in me says that they were probably also ready to change and we happened to be on the scene to help them along. Regardless of the cause, they have changed for the better.” Plans for his retirement include landscaping his property and a cruise. “I’m looking forward to pursuing hobbies I’ve put on hold for years. I’m very keen on art. I also look forward to lots of reading, joining the local choral group, and anything else that doesn’t require computers, pens or paper - apart from cryptic crosswords.” “I think I’ll also avoid crime programmes or novels. That may be too much like homework.”

Warm weather expected for New Year By Bridget Rutherford CHRISTCHURCH WILL get a hot New Year’s Eve before a slightly cooler day to mark the beginning of 2018. After more than 14mm of rain fell over 48 hours, the city can expect a run of sunny, but cooler, days leading up to a hot Sunday. MetService forecaster Cameron Coutts said today and tomorrow were expected to reach 20 deg C while Saturday would get to 21 deg C. “The last day of the year it’s up to 29 deg C. It’s looking good for New Year’s Eve.” January 1 would be cooler, at about 24

deg C, and cloudy, he said. “It will be a bit cooler, there will be a north-easterly breeze which will keep the temperature down.” Mr Coutts said over a 48-hour period from Christmas Day to yesterday morning, 14.4mm of rain fell on the city. It came as relief after two fires ripped through Selwyn farmland days earlier. A fire near Rolleston on Saturday destroyed a house and damaged several homes and sheds. On Christmas Day another burned through about 100ha of Hororata paddocks destroying sheds. The Boxing Day one-day international between the Black Caps and West Indies

was interrupted due to the rain. Banks Peninsula could expect similar temperatures to Christchurch for New Year. For those heading further afield, Kaikoura would reach 25 deg C on Sunday and would drop to 22 deg C on January 1. Rain would dampen New Year’s Day in Nelson, but Picton would see sunny New Year’s Eve and days. Wanaka was expected to get to 25 deg C on Sunday, although it would be cloudy with brief rain. New Year’s Day would be similar. Queenstown would be slightly cooler, with rain on both days.

$4k goal for CCTV cameras reached By Julia Evans SUMNER WILL get surveillance cameras prompted by a spate of aggravated burglaries in the area. Safer Sumner’s Kath Preston said it was “excellent news” that the group had surpassed its $4000 goal to purchase two CCTV cameras, which will record traffic going in and out of the village. The target was hit as Johnston Architects, based in Wakefield Ave, offered to match any donations made on the Safer Sumner Givealittle page. “They approached us and said they’d like to try and help . . . it’s very generous,” Ms Preston said. The Givealittle page has raised about $3000 from more than 40 donors so with Johnston’s donation the total is up to about $6000. The page closes on January 5. The bid to install cameras was launched following four aggravated burglaries in Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs, Sumner and Scarborough earlier in the year. One of these involved mother Emely van Ras, who, by using a decorative Fijian skull crusher, held off an intruder with a knife. A man was charged with three of the four aggravated burglary offences, including that of Miss van Ras. He has been remanded in custody and will next appear in court on February 21. Johnston Architects owner Regan Johnston said the business has recently moved to Sumner from the central city so the company wanted to get involved in an important community initiative. “It’s important to the community. We thought, we’re new – let’s do our part,” he said.

Ms Preston said residents have been concerned for a number of years that property-related crime was on the rise. However, she said it was the burglary of Miss van Ras that sparked the group into action. “The idea is that if something does happen we’ve got footage to help track down whoever was involved,” she said.

But she said the cameras would also act as a good deterrent to crime. “It’ll tell people we’re watching you, behave yourselves,” she said. Ms Preston said the group was working on locations to get the best footage of traffic. And said it would be purchasing the cameras “as soon as possible.” Any footage captured would only be viewed by police, who support the initiative, and security staff.

2 roasted red capsicums, peeled, seeded and chopped ½ red onion, chopped ¼ cup chopped parsley 4 cloves garlic, chopped ¼ cup red wine vinegar ¼ cup red wine 1 Tbsp honey 1 Tbsp dijon mustard

Directions To roast the capsicum, place it straight on to the flames in the barbecue and rotate until all of the outside is blackened. Place in a plastic bag and tie a knot in the top to make the capsicum sweat so the skin is easier to remove.

Mix together all of the sauce ingredients and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the steaks from the fridge and allow to come to room temperature. Gardening Are you passionate about passion fruit? By Henri Ham PASSION FRUIT are a delicious summer fruit that can be enjoyed in salads, desserts, drinks, sauces and of course eaten fresh. They are a sub-tropical plant, which basically means they need a lot of sun (at least six hours a day) and also like water. And they also need something to grow on – like a trellis or similar strong structure. If you think you’ve got just the spot to grow passion fruit, then buy some seedlings. Passion fruit like well-drained soil and they are also heavy feeders, which means they need more nutrients than your average plant. So before you start planting, dig in some organic matter to the soil. It’s also a good idea to pour some slow-release citrus fertiliser in the spot your going to plant. Next plant each seedling around 2m apart. Once planted, spread some mulch to help retain moisture and heat in the soil. And don’t forget to water. Ideally with passion fruit, you want to get a good network of vines growing across your support and producing fruit. To

do this, start by pinching off any laterals that grow off the main vine. Once your main vine (leader) is in a good position on the support structure, pinch out the top bud to encourage lots of side shoots to spread sideways and then train them across your support. Give the plants a couple more feeds of citrus fertiliser during the year. And be sure to water regularly, particularly when they start fruiting. When the fruit are ready to harvest they will go from green to a black/deep purple colour and you can start picking them off.

Beautiful borders with ageratum By Henri Ham AS MOST of us gardeners learn over time (often through trial and error), some plants are suited to some purposes better than others. Bedding, hanging baskets, pots, tubs, rock gardens and more. Well, ageratum is one of the top plants I think of when someone says they would like to create a floral border. It’s perfect for borders because it grows quite densely and it doesn’t grow too tall. Plus, I personally think it looks quite stunning when

grown in a border. Ageratum grow to a height of 20cm and are also good for growing in bedding, window boxes and rock gardens. Once you’ve got your plants look for a full sun to semi-shade spot in the garden and plant each one

around 20cm apart. Ageratum can cope with pretty dry conditions but it will do better if you water it regularly. Depending on the weather where you are, in around four to eight weeks you can expect to see this easy-care plant flower.

A whistle-stop tour of Whistler By Mike Yardley VENTURING over Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge is the gateway to the best of British Colombia’s outdoorsy pursuits, where a supporting cast of stellar encounters lie within easy reach of the city. Beyond North Vancouver, the Sea to Sky Highway whisks you all the way to Whistler, on a superbly picturesque drive. I joined LandSea Tours & Adventures which operates a riveting return day trip from Vancouver, with an insightful narration and ample time to do your own thing. Soaring mountain ranges punctuate the terrain, flanking glinting Howe Sound, a glacial fiord that hugs much of the highway. The surrounding hillsides reveal its glacial pedigree, where the rock faces are all so incredibly grooved and smooth from the glacial grinding. We stopped at Porteau Cove, fiendishly popular with scuba divers, where scuttled shipwrecks and artificial reefs support hundreds of species of marine life. Passing through Britannia Beach, which previously boasted the British Empire’s biggest copper mine, we were approaching Squamish, when a strikingly gigantic landmark that looked uncannily like the Rock of Gibraltar or El Capitan, shuffled into view. This towering granite monolith, one of the world’s biggest, is the Stawamus Chief. Its vertiginous rock face dominates the view from the highway and I could just make out fearless rock-climbers ascending its 700m vertical wall,

like intrepid ants on a high-stakes mission. I was quite content to watch on. Right next door is a gorgeous forested scenic reserve, where the easy trails lead you to Shannon Falls. I spotted a peregrine falcon wheeling in the sky, enroute. They frequently nest here. If you soar like a falcon, the Sea to Sky Country would resemble a geological mosaic of natural drama; from volcanic cones and expansive lava flows to sheets of ice and thundering waterfalls. Shannon Falls is theatrically magnificent, a gushing curtain of water plunging lustily, with a 300m drop. North of Squamish is Brackendale, home to one of the highest concentrations of wintering bald eagles in North America. even spot beers plucking the fish from the riverbank. This mass-spectacle of fish returning to their birthplace to die is so immense, that salmon DNA has even been detected in Brackendale’s trees. One of the region’s newest breathtakers is the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, which opened in 2015, zipping up you to a ridge below Mt Habrich, which serves up panoramic views of Stawamus Chief and Shannon Falls, along the way. You’ll burn through the pixels snapping away at this seraphic slab of BC. If gondola gliding is your gig, nothing compares to the highwire extravaganza of Whistler’s peak to peak experience, an engineering tour de force, gently slinging wide-eyed passengers across the mountaintops, from Whistler to Blackcomb. It holds world records for the longest free span between ropeway towers, at 3.03km, and for boasting the highest point above the ground, at 436m.

Hot hatchback from christmas issue Mercedes-Benz out now! By Ross Kiddie MERCEDES-Benz’s GLA series AMG45 is an unlikely sports car, it quite literally puts the word sport into sport utility vehicle. Based on the popular crossover vehicle, the GLA45 is a hot hatchback like no other. The entire GLA-Class has just had a fairly substantial generation change and the 45 is even more desirable with its clean, curvy lines and AMG sports kit that reeks of desire. Not only does the GLA45 look the part, it has an engineering package that is exciting and leaves nothing to the imagination. Under the bonnet sits a 2-litre turbocharged engine. It is a match for the plethora of four and five-door performance cars which have found their way across the market over the years. The engine is pretty much a carryover from the previous generation model, and is much the same unit that powers a wide range of Mercedes Benz product, although throughout its line-up there are varying power outputs depending on the application. In the AMG it has rated at a substantial 280kW and 475Nm. As a consequence it is a very exciting package, the engine is strong and crisp across the entire rev band, and if you think there’s the likelihood of turbo lag somewhere, I certainly couldn’t find it. In terms of figures, the AMG45 is fast; it will lunge from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.4sec and will top end at 250km/h. According to my stopwatch it will also complete a highway overtake (80km/h to 120km/h) in 3.5sec. Mercedes-Benz also claims a 7.5-litre per 100km (37mpg) combined cycle fuel average. These are impressive figures, and it’s no wonder that the GLA in this form appeals to a wide range of buyers. Drive is channelled through a seven-speed automatic transmission to all four-wheel wheels. The latter adds an element of stability and natural grip along with a secure feeling from the road to the steering. When you have that amount of power on tap it’s nice to know it is going to

be applied safely and with the maximum chance of grip being maintained. The latter is provided by sport specification Continental tyres (235/40 x 20in), which by the sheer nature of their size and construction have an unyielding tenure with the road, turn-in is decisive and there’s solid feedback through the entire vehicle. • Price – MercedesBenz GLA AMG45, $109,700 • Dimensions – Length, 4455mm; width, 1804mm; height, 1473mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, four-wheeldrive, 1991cc, 280kW, 475Nm, seven-speed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 4.4sec • Fuel usage – 7.5l/100km

Add to that the sensation you get from the rear end in a corner as its suspension works to keep the wheels firmly in the contact with the road, the GLA45 tantalises the driver. There is no sensation of understeer or oversteer and under power it squats and lunges out of the apex. The fully independent suspension is firm, it’s not going to rattle your bones at slow speed, but the spring and damper rates are biased towards that sporty drive and the car makes no apology for that, body roll is negligible and suspension movement just enough so that mid-corner broken surfaces are absorbed. I took the test car to Terrace Downs and a little further towards the Lake Coleridge Village. It’s my favourite high country road which I reserve only for

performance vehicles. The GLA45 was in its element, it scorched with speed between corners, the AMG performance brake package has much force, and when corner turn-in is directed, steerage is forceful and accurate. The GLA45 is also a car which comes well specced. I guess, it needs to, at $109,700 it doesn’t come at a budget price, but I can report it carries all of the ingredients which make Mercedes-Benz a desirable brand in the first instance. Like the rest of the series, it is built so that familiarity with other cars from the marque isn’t jeopardised. Yet the GLA45 sits apart in respect to its look, it oozes desire, and when you fire it up a loud bark out the exhaust tells you that a thrilling drive is in store, the backfire as gears change is deliberately enticing, I simply adored it. Mercedes-Benz will do well with the newcomer if sales of the previous model are anything to go by. I’ve seen a lot of the old series and already I’ve noticed some of the newcomers on city roads. That’s no surprise to me, it is a car which is practical, yet it has the fundamental ingredients for which we have warmed to the performance car package. It’s also a car which is there for those who want to step up from the concept of Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution and Subaru’s WRX STi. Make no mistake, those two cars I’ve just mentioned are still on my list of desirables, but the GLA45 is a step above, it adds the premium factor into the mix.

The Taieri club will host more than 500 bowlers vying for a shot at national honours, with current, former and aspiring New Zealand representatives mixing it with club bowlers and provincial representatives. The format will see the first five days consist of section play, before post-section, which takes place from January 3-8. Gary Lawson became the most successful Kiwi bowler of alltime when he claimed his 11th national title in New Plymouth last year, where he took out the pairs with Wellington-based Australian Neville Rodda. Lawson, 52, will go into the championships with a strong chance in all three disciplines. He achieved the feat at Molyneux Park, Alexandra, on Boxing Day. The Canterbury Kings all rounder went into the match on 99 wickets and reached three figures when he bowled Otago Volts star Jimmy Neesham with just his third delivery of the match, having come on as first change in the sixth over.
